How this test is marked
IELTS Writing is marked by an examiner on four equally weighted criteria. This practice test has no automatic score, so write your answer under timed conditions and then check it against the notes below.
- Task achievement or response. Answer every part of the task, with an overview in Task 1 and a clear position in Task 2.
- Coherence and cohesion. Organise ideas in clear paragraphs and link them with a range of devices, without overusing them.
- Lexical resource. Use precise, natural vocabulary and avoid repeating the same words.
- Grammatical range and accuracy. Use a mix of sentence structures and keep errors under control.
Notes for each question
Question 1: The table shows the percentage of households with internet access in four countries (A to D) in 2005, 2015 and…
Start with an overview: access rose in every country, and Country C stayed highest while Country D started lowest and grew most in the final decade. Then compare the starting points and the biggest rises, for example Country B from 12 to 77. Group the countries instead of listing every number, and include the unit (percent of households).
Question 2: Some people believe that governments should spend money on improving public transport, while others think they…
Cover both views fairly and state your own opinion clearly. Public transport: reduces congestion and pollution, helps people without cars. Roads: faster travel for goods and emergency vehicles, more flexibility, especially in rural areas. Use one example per paragraph and make sure the conclusion shows your own view.
