What Is CAT?

The Common Admission Test (CAT) is India's national entrance exam for postgraduate management programs, used by the IIMs and hundreds of other business schools. It's a 2-hour computer-based test split into three separately-timed 40-minute sections, VARC, DILR, and Quant, taken in that fixed order with no ability to move time between sections.

Section Focus Typical Duration
VARC Reading comprehension passages, para-jumbles, verbal reasoning 40 minutes
DILR Data interpretation sets and logical reasoning puzzles 40 minutes
Quant Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, number systems 40 minutes

Always verify the current exact pattern and duration on the official CAT website before your exam.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all CAT practice tests on PrepTest Hub free?

Yes. Every CAT practice test on PrepTest Hub is 100% free, with no registration required, and includes instant answers with per-question explanations the moment you submit.

What are the three sections of CAT?

CAT has three sections: VARC (Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension), DILR (Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning), and Quant (Quantitative Ability). Each is separately timed and taken in that order.

How long is the CAT exam?

CAT is a 2-hour exam: three sections of 40 minutes each. You cannot move time between sections, so pacing within each 40-minute block matters as much as your overall accuracy.
