How to Book IELTS Through IDP: Step-by-Step (2026)

If IDP is your local IELTS administrator, or the one you've chosen over British Council, the general questions about test type, format, and roughly what it costs are probably already answered. What's left is getting IDP's own registration system right: finding the correct country portal, working through the booking flow without a slip-up, and understanding the one or two things IDP does a bit differently from the other administrator. This guide covers that in detail.

What IDP Actually Is

IDP Education is one of the three organisations that jointly own and administer IELTS, alongside British Council and Cambridge Assessment English. IDP is headquartered in Australia and has historically had a particularly strong presence there, as well as in India, where it operates a very large network of test centres. It's also a major administrator in a number of other countries across South and Southeast Asia and beyond. Where both IDP and British Council operate in the same country, the test itself, the scoring standard, and the certificate you end up with are identical, the practical difference is purely about which administrator has better date availability and a more convenient centre for you specifically. In markets where IDP is dominant or the only administrator present, this guide is simply the registration process, full stop.

Finding Your Country's IDP Portal

IDP's booking system is organised by country, and the entry point is IDP's global IELTS website. When you visit that URL, it will typically detect your location and redirect you automatically to your country's specific IDP IELTS portal, so don't be surprised if the address bar shows a different, country-specific web address once the page loads; that's expected behaviour, not an error. If the automatic redirect ever sends you to the wrong country, or you're booking on behalf of someone in a different location, look for a country or region selector on the page rather than relying on the redirect, and make sure you complete registration on the portal for the country where you'll actually sit the test, since centres, dates, and pricing are all specific to that local site.

IDP's Registration Flow

The core steps mirror registration with any IELTS administrator: create an account with your email and personal details, search for available test centres and dates in your city, select your test type, and pay online to confirm. As with any IELTS booking, enter your name exactly as it appears on the passport or ID you'll bring on test day, IDP checks this at the centre, and a mismatch can cause problems that are hard to resolve on the morning of the test. One point worth flagging honestly: exactly how the search and selection screens are laid out can vary somewhat by country, since IDP's local portals aren't always identically built. The underlying logic, search by location, pick a date, choose a test type, pay, holds everywhere, even if the interface details differ.

In several of IDP's larger markets, including Australia and India, IDP has also invested heavily in mobile app access for managing bookings and checking results, alongside the website. If a dedicated IDP IELTS app is available in your country, it can be a convenient way to track your booking and get notified when results are ready, but availability and functionality vary by region, so treat this as a possible bonus rather than something to count on everywhere.

Computer-Delivered vs Paper-Based Through IDP

Like British Council, IDP offers both computer-delivered and paper-based IELTS in most of its markets, and computer-delivered sessions are generally scheduled far more often, sometimes multiple times a week in busier cities, compared to monthly or less for paper-based. Computer-delivered results are typically available in about 3-5 days, versus roughly 13 days for paper-based. The exam content and difficulty are the same either way, and nothing on your certificate indicates which format you sat, so the choice comes down to whether you're comfortable typing your Writing responses accurately under time pressure, or would rather write by hand.

Payment and Confirmation

Once you've selected a date, centre, and test type, you'll pay online, accepted payment methods depend on your country's portal, but typically include card payment and sometimes local alternatives. You'll then receive a confirmation with your booking reference, date, time, and centre location. Keep this confirmation accessible, whether as an email, a download, or in the app if you're using one, you may be asked to show it, alongside your ID, when you arrive at the centre.

One Skill Retake: A Distinctive Option Worth Knowing About

One genuinely useful option available through IDP (and British Council) in a growing number of locations is One Skill Retake. The basic idea: if you sit the full IELTS test but underperform in exactly one of the four skills, say, your Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking score falls short while the other three meet your target, you may be able to retake just that single skill within a set window afterward, rather than sitting the entire test again. Where it's available, this can save considerable time, money, and stress compared to a full re-sit. That said, availability is genuinely inconsistent: not every country offers it, not every centre within a country that does offer it supports every skill for retake, and not every institution or visa body accepts a One Skill Retake result in place of a single combined test sitting. Before you count on this option, check directly on your local IDP portal whether it's offered where you're testing, and separately confirm with whichever university, employer, or immigration authority you're applying to that they'll accept a One Skill Retake result.

Document and ID Requirements at IDP Centres

IDP centres require the same identification document you registered with, and in a number of countries a valid passport is mandatory for IELTS regardless of whether you'd normally use a different national ID for other purposes, this is worth checking specifically for your country, since it catches candidates who assume a driver's licence or national ID card will be accepted the way it might be for other exams. Whatever document you plan to bring, make sure it will still be valid on your test date, not just valid when you register, and that the name on it matches your registration exactly.

Common Mistakes Specific to IDP Booking

A handful of errors show up repeatedly with IDP bookings. Landing on the wrong country's portal, often because of an old bookmarked link, a shared link from someone in a different country, or a VPN affecting the automatic redirect, can lead to browsing centres and dates that don't actually apply to you; always confirm the country shown on the page before you register. Assuming a non-passport ID will be accepted when your country's IDP centres actually require a passport is another common and avoidable problem. In cities where IDP runs computer-delivered and paper-based sessions at different physical venues, it's easy to book the wrong location by not reading the centre address carefully. And, as with any IELTS booking, selecting standard Academic or General Training when your visa route actually requires IELTS for UKVI (where IDP offers it) will produce a certificate that isn't accepted for that specific purpose.

What Happens After You Register

After booking, IDP typically sends pre-test information on arrival time, what to bring, and centre rules, worth reading in full, since ID and personal-item rules are enforced without exceptions on test day. Results follow the same general timeline as other administrators: around 3-5 days for computer-delivered, about 13 days for paper-based, accessible through your IDP account or app, with a Test Report Form issued or made available for collection depending on local practice.

Once your date is confirmed, the best use of your remaining preparation time is realistic, timed practice rather than more research about the booking process.
