How the overall band is rounded

Add the four bands, divide by four and round to the nearest half band. An average that ends in .25 rounds up to .5, and one that ends in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. For example, 6.5, 6.5, 6.5 and 7.0 average 6.625 and give an overall 6.5, while 6.0, 6.5, 6.5 and 6.0 average 6.25 and give 6.5. Read the full explanation in our guide to the overall band score, then find your weakest skill with a full mock test.

Questions about band scores

How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?

Add your four skill bands, divide by four and round to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to .5 and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.

Is this calculator official?

No. The overall band rule is exact, but the raw score conversions are estimates because the official table changes slightly between test versions. Your official result comes only from the test provider.

Why is General Training Reading converted differently?

General Training texts are easier to read, so you need more correct answers to reach the same band. For example, about 34 correct answers gives band 7 in General Training, compared with about 30 in Academic.

Can I calculate Writing and Speaking from raw scores?

No. Writing and Speaking are marked by examiners against four criteria each, so there is no raw score. Enter your estimated band for these skills.

This calculator is a study aid, not an official result. Always rely on the score report from the test provider.
